Areas in My Life (MyBHS)

To help remember the areas of my life, use the following acronym MyBHS My Best High School for Mind, Body, Heart Spirit.

Mind – Intellectual

Body – Physical

Heart – Social

Spirit – Spiritual

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Mark 12:30

S1 – God to Free Me from the Bondage of Debt

My Spiritual goal #1 (S1) is to be freed from bondage of debt. I will use the gifts and talents God has given me to earn money to payoff my obligations. I will also use gratitude in Jesus Christ as a key part of the plan, since He is constantly rescuing His children from bondage to sin, debt, fear and so on.

For behold, we are in bondage to the Lamanites, and are taxed with a tax which is grievous to be borne. And now, behold, our brethren will deliver us out of our bondage, or out of the hands of the Lamanites, and we will be their slaves; for it is better that we be slaves to the Nephites than to pay tribute to the king of the Lamanites.

21 Yea, and in the valley of Alma they poured out their thanks to God because he had been merciful unto them, and eased their burdens, and had delivered them out of bondage, and none could deliver them except it were the Lord their God.

Mosiah 24:21
S1a – Discover

Where am I and where does God want me to be? As of Dec 2022 I’m overwhelmed with my job – they need me to work more hours, I’m learning new things but it is taking longer than I desire and my energy and drive is low. I have great anxiety over my marriage – will I be able to set healthy boundaries so my needs are met? Do I have an eternal family or is my family scattered. Will the Lord answer my prayers as I strive to call down blessing from Heaven upon my family (wife and children) and household.

Does God know I’m in bondage? Yes.

Does he want me to be in bondage? No.

Will he save me from bondage like he did to the Children of Israel so many years ago, or in the story below about President Henry B. Eyring? Yes.

Years ago I heard President Ezra Taft Benson speak in a conference like this. He counseled us to do all we could to get out of debt and stay out. He mentioned mortgages on houses. He said that it might not be possible, but it would be best if we could pay off all our mortgage debt (Prepare for the Days of Tribulation by Ezra Taft Benson, Nov 1980). I turned to my wife after the meeting and asked ‘Do you think there is any way we could do that?’ At first we couldn’t. And then by evening I thought of a property we had acquired in another state. For years we had tried to sell it without success. But because we trusted God and a few words from the midst of His servant’s message, we placed a phone call Monday morning to the man in San Francisco who had our property listed to sell. I had called him a few weeks before, and he had said, ‘We haven’t had anyone show interest in your property for years.’ But on the Monday after conference, I heard an answer that to this day strengthens my trust in God and His servants. The man on the phone said, ‘I am surprised by your call. A man came in today inquiring whether he could buy your property.’ In amazement I asked, ‘How much did he offer to pay?’ It was a few dollars more than the amount of our mortgage. A person might say that was only a coincidence. But our mortgage was paid off. And our family still listens for any word in a prophet’s message that might be sent to tell what we should do to find the security and peace God wants for us.

Trust in God, Then Go and Do by President Henry B. Eyring

What do I need to do? Acronym – A.S.K. – Ask Seek Knock.

Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

3 Nephi 14:7

Ask God to free me from Bondage

Seek – discover the gifts and talents he has given me as he has prepared a way for my deliverance – which is Hearkening to Jesus, make a plan to improve my myself by following God’s will for me.

Knock – Act – to grow in faith. Then reflect on what I learned. Repeat the process of A.S.K.

S1b – Plan

I feel this is where most our time is ill spent. I have a problem of ready set aim, aim, aim and I never pull the trigger and fire. The fear of making the wrong decision keeps me from moving forward. Better is the enemy of good. My plan is to keep all of God’s commandments and to be free from debt. Each day I will ask God for direction on what I need to be, have and do today that I might grow into the abundant life and be freed from the bondage of debt.

  • Follow God by keeping His Commandments
  • Ask God to deliver me from the bondage of debt
  • Seek help from others (wife, counselors, good books, professionals)
  • Knock – act today, take the first step towards financial freedom. Go to work. Go to the Temple. Go to Church. Gratitude journal each day – giving thanks to Jesus for His mercy and patience and assistance with me as I implement His teachings in my life so I can become a tree of life – lacking nothing. I wll accept God’s will for me and offer Him my will unto Him, as he knows better than me how I can be free from bondage.
S1c – Act

In some ways, to Act is just daily showing up. Showing up for work. Showing up for Church. Showing up for my family and so on. Slow and steady in the case of the Aesop Fable – The Tortise and The Hare.

S1d – Reflect

What is working in my life? Keep doing that.

  1. Worshiping Jesus at Church and the Temple. I’m feeling comforted even though my circumstances remain the same.
  2. My simple prayers are being answered. On 20 Dec 2022 Cindy and I were flying back from our Christmas Rehearsal visit with Raquel in Charlotte NC. When we checked in, we were assigned seats in different rows. I wanted help with our marriage and asked God to help us that we might travel together. Well I asked the flight attendant if we can change seats and was told the flight is completely booked. We just moved forward with faith, my seat was taken by an Indian family, the son was in my seat as he wanted to sit with his aged parents which worked for me, because his seat was closer to Cindy, we sat together in the row and no one came into the seats even though the rest of the flight was completely booked. Such a tender mercy from Jesus to help a husband who is very concerned with his marriage.

Heart – Social Goal

Eternal Marriage

Cause: treat Cindy with love and kindness. Make it easy for Cindy to want to be married to me. Be Healthy and Fit. Be Financially Free. Be Strong and Confident.

Desired Effect: love, affection, companionship, golden eggs, fruit from the Tree of Life, an Eternal Marriage

Brethren, your first and foremost duty as a bearer of the priesthood is to love and care for your wife. Become one with her. Be her partner. Make it easy for her to want to be yours. No other interest in life should take priority over building an eternal relationship with her. Nothing on TV, a mobile device, or a computer is more important than her well-being. Take an inventory of how you spend your time and where you devote your energy. That will tell you where your heart is. Pray to have your heart attuned to your wife’s heart. Seek to bring her joy. Seek her counsel, and listen. Her input will improve your output.

If you have a need to repent because of the way you have treated the women closest to you, begin now. And remember that it is your responsibility to help the women in your life receive the blessings that derive from living the Lord’s law of chastity. Never be the reason that a woman is unable to receive her temple blessings.

We Can Do Better and Be Better by President Russell M. Nelson. April 2019 General Conference.

Repeated Behaviors Become Habits

Formula for Change = After I Anchor Moment, I will Tiny Behavior, then Celebrate

Recipes for Change

After I stand up, I will tidy up one thing, then look up and repeat my motto with hope!

Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men.

2 Nephi 31:20

My motto is – “I am happy, holy, healthy, wealthy and wise Son of God with an eternal family, I am a great engineer.”

It is my desire that my behaviors shall reinforce and testify who I am and what I’m growing into and becoming – that is a Son of God. For example:

If I’m a Son of God/Holy/Wise/Happy, I will listen to my Heavenly Parents and not to Satan and be of good cheer.

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But [Jesus] answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Matthew 4:3-4

If I’m a Son of God then I ask my Father for help, not Satan.

…O Lord, thou hast given us a commandment that we must call upon thee, that from thee we may receive according to our desires.

Ether 3:2

“What we do in our homes with His sacred time [Sabbath Day] and with what we learn in His sacred space [Temple] is pivotal to becoming partakers of the divine nature [personal revelation, freed from bondage, joy]. We easily can be overcome by the routine and mundane matters of mortality. Sleeping, eating, dressing, working, playing, exercising, and many other customary activities are necessary and important. But ultimately, what we become is the result of our knowledge of and willingness to learn from the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; it is not merely the sum total of our daily pursuits over the course of a lifetime.” (Elder David Bednar, Exceeding Great and Precious Promises, October 2017 General Conference)
