That They Might Know Thee

Elder Jonathan S. Schmitt of the Seventy

Which of Jesus’s names should I take upon myself this week?

The blessings and power that come from knowing Jesus Christ by His many names. Many of Jesus’s names are titles that help us understand His mission, purpose, character, and attributes. So we can develop Christlike attributes that bring joy and purpose to our lives.

Jesus Knows My Name

Jesus loves me and calls me by my name, which shows that he knows me and is aware of me and that I matter to Him.

  • “…Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)
  • “…One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other – This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Joseph Smith – History 1:17)
  • “…he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.” (John 10:3)

1-Good Shepherd (John 10:11)

“…good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11) In our ministering, texting and technology should be used to enhance, not replace, personal contact.

2-High Priest of Good Things to Come (Heb 9:11)

Faith always points toward the future. Faith always has to do with blessings and truths and events that will yet be efficacious in our lives. Faith in Jesus Christ produces the desired result or effect we want in our lives. Joyfully living the gospel helps us to become diciples of good things to come.

Exercising faith in Jesus is the cause, which produces the desired effect or blessing.

3-The Same, Yesterday, Today, and Forever (Heb 13:8)

Great spiritual strength comes from small and simple things (Alma 37:6) like developing ‘holy habits and righteous routines’ of daily prayer, repentance, scripture study, and service to others.

4-The Holy One of Israel (2 Nephi 9:18-19, 41)

Every time we worship in the temple, we leave endowed with greater power to make our homes places of holiness. “…that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power…and thine angels have charge over them;” (D&C 109:22)

5-Faithful and True (Rev 19:11)

“Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.” (D&C 6:36). Abide in me – means to have the Savior stay – not temporary but to stay forever with me. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6). Jesus is the only way! My stake president Hansen, in Tule Springs Stake Conference on 11/13/2022 said statements like “you do you” or “find your own way” is a lie, because Jesus is the way. The world has nothing to offer us that compares to what Jesus offers – abundant life, all that His Father has, peace, knowledge and revelation, health, and so on.
