Overcome The World and Find Rest

by President Russell M. Nelson | October 2022 General Conference

Problem – What is keeping you from feeling God’s love and power right now?

Greater peace will come as you couple your efforts to be obedient with serving those around you. So many individuals who have what they perceive to be meager talents humbly and generously use those talents to bless the lives of those around them. Selfishness is the root of great evil. The antidote for that evil is exemplified in the life of the Savior. He shows us how to focus our lives outward in unselfish service others.

For Peace at Home by Elder Richard G. Scott, April 2013 General Conference

In President Nelson’s talk, he mentions several action items we can do right now so we can receive “…countless privileges, blessings, and miracles…”

3-Step Plan to have God in your life

  1. Come unto God in His Holy Temple
    • “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; … and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matt 11:28-30)
    • “Making and keeping covenants actually makes life easier! Each person who makes covenants in baptismal fonts and in temples – and keeps them – has increased access to the power of Jesus Christ. Please ponder that stunning truth!”
    • “A temple literally is the house of the Lord, a sacred space specifically set apart for worshipping God and for receiving and remembering His great and precious promises.” (Elder Bednar, Exceeding Great and Precious Promises, Oct 2017 General Conference)
    • “A principal purpose of the temple is to elevate our vision from the things of the world to the blessings of eternity. Removed for a short time from the worldly settings with which we are familiar, we can ‘look to God and live’ by receiving and remembering the great and precious promises whereby we become partakers of the divine nature.” (Elder Bednar, Exceeding Great and Precious Promises, Oct 2017 General Conference)
  2. Commandment to Overcome the world
    • “For verily I say unto you, I will that ye should overcome the world; wherefore I will have compassion upon you.” (D&C 64:2)
    • Remember the words of Nephi – “…for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.” (1 Nephi 3:7). So, Jesus has asked us to overcome the world and he has prepared a way for me to do it. Do I really believe this? Just think what a wonderful blessing this is. I want to be freed from the emotional plagues of the world – arrogance, pride, anger, immorality, hatred, greed, jealously, and fear. I want this and Jesus also wants me to have this. My will and desire is aligned with God’s will and desire for me. This puts be on the path. I need to then be patience with myself as I grow and become like God is. So, what do I need to do?
    • Cast Satan out of your life.
      • “…and all this iniquity had come upon the people because they did yield themselves unto the power of Satan.” (3 Nephi 7:5)
  3. Take Ownership of Your Testimony and Conversion
    • I urged them then—and I plead with you now—to take charge of your own testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel. Work for it. Nurture it so that it will grow. Feed it truth. Don’t pollute it with false philosophies of unbelieving men and women. As you make the continual strengthening of your testimony of Jesus Christ your highest priority, watch for miracles to happen in your life. (Choices for Eternity by President Russell M. Nelson)
    • Satan delights in your misery. Cut it short. Cast his influence out of your life! Start today to experience the joy of putting off the natural man. (The Power of Spiritual Momentum by President Russell M. Nelson)

Failure to overcome the world

The scriptures give many, many accounts of people who chose the world over Jesus and the consequences they receive. I personally like the account from Ezekiel 6:6-10 which reflects both my consequences and the pain it causes Jesus because of my sins, “…I am broken with their whorish heart…”

6. In all your dwellingplaces the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places shall be desolate; that your altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and your idols may be broken and cease, and your images may be cut down, and your works may be abolished.

7. And the slain shall fall in the midst of you, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

8. Yet will I leave a remnant, that ye may have some that shall escape the sword among the nations, when ye shall be scattered through the countries.

9. And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall lothe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

10. And they shall know that I am the LORD, and that I have not said in vain that I would do this evil unto them.

Ezekiel 6:6-10

This shows us the importance to identify deception and discern truth from error. For if we are deceived and succumb to the enticing of Satan, it will hurt Jesus, it will destroy our cities, our works will be abolished and we will “lothe” or hate ourselves. Good-bye to the idea of leaving a legacy for our family.

Success How to overcome the world

In a nutshell – chose Jesus over everything else. Remember, the wise man built his house upon the rock of Jesus Christ (3 Nephi 14:24-27). Yes, your spouse is key to your salvation and happiness but if you build your life upon them, what happens if they die, leave the Church, divorce you, etc. Do you continue to keep your covenants and trust God, that He will convert this tragedy into a blessing as you grow through these heart wrenching struggles? Do you believe joy and happiness comes from Him or can this only come from the world? Put God first, and you will become a better spouse, you will experience greater joy and peace. God wants your marriage to work – “…For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.” (Matt 19:5-6). We are meant to love both God and mankind. God is all knowing, trust Him and He will guide you on the path for an eternal marriage.

The natural man (that is selfish instead of selfless) is an enemy to God and remains so forever ‘unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ.’ (Mosiah 3:19) Each time you seek for and follow the promptings of the Spirit, each time you do anything good – things that ‘the natural man’ would not do – you are overcoming the world.

To overcome the world is a process of growing, not a one-time event such as baptism or partaking of the sacrament weekly. It is a virtuous upward cycle that produces spiritual momentum. The more we repent daily and practice keeping our covenants to thwart the temptations and lies of Satan, the closer we come to Jesus and feel his pull to gather us in. Thus we are blessed with spiritual strength, personal revelation, increased faith, and the ministering of angels. We change our very nature – our thoughts and actions. We become a holy, selfless man that radiates the Love of God to all around us.

Happiness – Lies and Truth

Lies: The ‘world insists that power, possessions, popularity, and pleasures of the flesh bring happiness, they do not! They cannot! What they do produce is nothing but a hollow substitute for ‘the blessed and happy state of those [who] keep the commandments of God… for they are blessed in all things.’ (Mosiah 2:41)

Truth: “The truth is that it is much more exhausting to seek happiness where you can never find it!” Yoke yourself to Jesus Christ and do the spiritual work required to overcome the world, He has the power to lift you. The covenants we make with God yoke or bind us to Him. Remember, you will face opposition from Satan because he does not want you to discover the power of Jesus Christ.

Help and Blessings

From our Prophet, President Russell M. Nelson – With the power of the holy apostleship vested in me: I…

  1. Bless you in your quest to overcome this world.
  2. Bless you to increase your faith in Jesus Christ
  3. Learn how to draw upon His power.
  4. Bless to be able to discern truth from error.
  5. Bless to care more about the things of God than the things of this world.
  6. Bless you to strengthen those you love

17 …And Nephi did minister with power and with great authority.

18 And it came to pass that they were angry with [Nephi], even because he had greater power than they, for it were not possible that they could disbelieve his words, for so great was his faith on the Lord Jesus Christ that angels did minister unto him daily.

3 Nephi 7:17-18

I have learned a truth that has been repeated so frequently in my life that I have come to know it as an absolute law. It defines the way obedience and service relate to the power of God. When we obey the commandments of the Lord and serve His children unselfishly, the natural consequences is power from God – power to do more than we can do by ourselves. Our insights, our talents, our abilities are expanded because we receive strength and power from the Lord. His power is a fundamental component to establishing a home filled with peace.

Key to Miracles – Believe Like a Child

Do you want to overcome the world? Then believe like a child in God’s miracles. Trust Jesus like a child trusts his father and is submissive to his will. Such believers are the kingdom of God.

Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Mark 10:14-16
