The Virtue of the Word

By Elder Mark D. Eddy of the Seventy, Oct 2022 General Conference

Essential Question

What growth will I experience from study daily study of the Book of Mormon?

Virtue of the Word of God can also be translated as Power of the Word of God.

And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue [Greek – power] is gone out of me

Luke 8:46
The Golden Plates

What tool has God given, to lead us back to Him? Among the many possible solutions, Alma’s faith led them to rely on the power of the word.

Behold, he changed their hearts; yea, he awakened them out of a deep sleep, and they awoke unto God. Behold, they were in the midst of darkness; nevertheless, their souls were illuminated by the light of the everlasting word… (Alma 5:7)

Behold, how many thousands of our brethren has he loosed from the pains of hell; and they are brought to sing redeeming love, and this because of the power of his word which is in us, therefore have we not great reason to rejoice? (Alma 26:13)

Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick [living] and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery…and land their souls…at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven. (Helaman 3:29-30)

Promised Blessings from using the Book of Mormon as a Guide

I promise that as you prayerfully study the Book of Mormon every day, you will make better decisions – every day. I promise that as you ponder what you study, the windows of heaven will open, and you will receive answers to your own questions and direction for your own life. I promise that as you daily immerse yourself in the Book of Mormon, you can be immunized against the evils of the day.

The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without it? by President Russell M. Nelson, October 2017 General Conference

Questions I have include what can I learn from the circumstances I’m in and how can I accept or change my circumstances? These circumstances include my marriage and family, being overweight, having fears and anxiety about the future, under the bondage of debt – living paycheck to paycheck. How to be of good cheer at times when I’m rejected and lonely. How to cast Satan out of my life and take upon me Christ’s yoke that I to may have the abundant life. How can I be an influence of good and help my brothers and sisters take a step closer to Jesus.

25 Now ye know that the children of Israel were in bondage; and ye know that they were laden with tasks, which were grievous to be borne; wherefore, ye know that it must needs be a good thing for them, that they should be brought out of bondage.

26 Now ye know that Moses was commanded of the Lord to do that great work; and ye know that by his word the waters of the Red Sea were divided hither and thither, and they passed through on dry ground

29 Yea, and ye also know that Moses, by his word according to the power of God which was in him, smote the rock, and there came forth water, that the children of Israel might quench their thirst.

1 Nephi 17:25-26, 29

Even though I’m currently experiencing these challenges, I must still plow in faith, that staying on the covenant path, as depicted as the iron rod, I will eventually obtain joy and happiness in the quest for the abundant life.

The covenant path is the only path that leads to exaltation and eternal life

The Power of Spiritual Momentum by President Russell M. Nelson, May 2022 General Conference

The Book of Mormon also talks about The Liahona, or compass that Lehi’s family used to guide them from the destruction of Jerusalem and to the promised land – Americas. What is my Liahona? Hearing the word of God in the Book of Mormon and Bible? Feeling the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Seeking counsel from holy and loving people like family members, Church leaders, professional counselors and so on.

The Liahona by Arnold Friberg

…And if it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has commanded them; wherefore, he did provide means for us while we did sojourn in the wilderness

1 Nephi 17:3
